What is adopt-a-firefighter program?
The program was designed to teach the necessary fire and life safety skills to kids at an early age. Our department works with local schools to come in once a month to discuss topics and be active with the class about safety. This program has been implemented with students at the first grade level for over half a decade.
Memorial DayEvery year in Somonauk on Memorial Day, the village organizes a
parade to honor service members who have given their life for the sake of this great nation. It is a peaceful day of remembrance followed by celebration. Local businesses set up around the Police/Fire Department area to provide food for the crowds watching the water fights and bucket brigade. |
Fire Prevention Week During fire prevention week, firefighters perform fire drills in the schools, do expanded classroom visits, and hold an open house at the end of the week.
Fire Drills and Classroom VisitsWhen fully geared up, Firefighters can appear very different. We like to bring our gear to the class room and give kids a chance to get familiar with it. Therefore in a true emergency, they will have will be acclimated to being around fire gear.
